Tractor-Trailer Overturns on Interstate 40 East

Knoxville, TN (December 31, 2020) The Tennessee Department of Transportation reported that a tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 40 East at Asheville Highway on the evening of December 31st and as a result blocked two lanes of traffic. More specifically, the incident is reported to have occurred at mile marker 395. Rescue crews worked to unload the tractor-trailer’s cargo, which included around 32,000 pounds of canned goods. Drivers were advised to exercise caution while passing through the area. Additional details about how the accident occurred are not yet available.

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety reports that forty five percent of large truck occupant fatalities in 2018 were the results of crashes in which the vehicle rolled over. Some of the most common causes of truck rollovers include drivers who travel too fast to safely navigate curves, trucks with improperly loaded or secured cargo, and drivers who make mistakes behind the wheel like failing to brake in time. One of the best things that passenger vehicle drivers can do to avoid ending up impacted as the result of a truck rollover is to drive cautiously around tractor-trailers and never travel too close to these vehicles.
