137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency room departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, passengers are also one and a half times more likely to be killed in crashes. To stay safe, pedestrians should make sure to only cross the road in designated areas. Pedestrians should also cautiously look around for vehicles in both directions before crossing the road. Pedestrians also must avoid assuming that drivers can see them because this is not always the case. After all, drivers might be distracted or even under the influence.
