Sevierville Pradaxa Lawyer
The drug Pradaxa was developed by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim and approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010. It is a blood thinner used to treat strokes caused by atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolisms. Unfortunately, since its introduction in 2010, it has been discovered that the adverse side effects of the drug Pradaxa can be life-threatening. Contact a Sevierville Pradaxa lawyer if you have been prescribed the drug and are experiencing side effects.
How Does Pradaxa Work?
According to the Pradaxa consumer website, the drug is a direct thrombin inhibitor. This type of medicine blocks the blood’s central clotting agent, thrombin, which then lowers the chance of the body forming blood clots.
Prior to Pradaxa, the drug warfarin was prescribed to treat atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. Warfarin requires close monitoring from doctors to ensure the right dose. While it may be more complex of a drug to administer, the effects can be reversed with vitamin K1. It was only recently that a reversal agent was approved for Pradaxa, although it still must be administered by a local hospital.
The Adverse Effects of Pradaxa
The FDA has required Pradaxa to have a black box warning, the agency’s strongest warning, on their packages. The warnings listed include:
- Prematurely stopping the use of Pradaxa greatly increases the rise of blood clots or stroke; and
- Hematomas may result in patients receiving anesthesia in the spine or undergoing a spinal puncture.
Pradaxa can cause bleeding that leads to death if severe enough. This is because, with the drug, the body can no longer form blood clots to stop bleeding. The risk of bleeding is higher for individuals who:
- Are over the age of 75;
- Are taking other blood thinning drugs;
- Have kidney problems; or
- Have stomach ulcers or have had bleeding in the stomach or intestines.
If you have experienced any of the adverse effects of Pradaxa, you need to speak with an experienced Pradaxa lawyer about your potential case.
Lawsuits Against Pradaxa
The New York Times reported in 2012 that Pradaxa was linked to over 500 deaths and was the most dangerous drug out of 800 drugs monitored by Institute for Safe Medication Practices. In 2014 the makers of Pradaxa settled claims against the drug for $650 million. Lawsuits are still being filed against Boehringer Ingelheim, stating that they did not follow through on their duty of reasonable care when designing, testing, manufacturing, marketing, and labeling of Pradaxa.
