Knoxville, TN (January 8, 2021) Emergency workers spent hours occupied cleaning a wreck on the ramp of Interstate 75 North from Interstate 640 after a tractor-trailer overturned in the area on the afternoon of January 8th. The Knoxville Police Department reports that the truck flipped over, its trailer was ripped open, and the hill was strewn with McDonald’s Happy Meal boxes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the accident. What caused the crash is still uncertain. Motorists were advised to temporarily avoid the area while it was being cleaned up.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has found that among the 499,000 police-reported crashes involving large trucks that occurred in 2018, approximately 4,415 or 1 percent of these crashes resulted in fatalities and 107,000 of these accidents or 21 percent result in injuries. Some of the most common reasons why cargo accidents occur include trucks with improperly secured cargo or cargo that is improperly balanced. One of the best steps that truck drivers can take to avoid these crashes is to slow down while navigating curves.
