Crash Spills Soda on Interstate 75 in Knoxville

TractorTrailer

Knoxville, TN (July 27, 2020) Following a tractor-trailer that overturned and spilled soda bottles on Interstate 75 in Knoxville on January 27, the road was closed until the following morning. Work crews were on the scene throughout the night clearing wreckage.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that road debris was a factor in 50,658 police-reported accidents annually between 2011 to 2014. Each year, these accidents resulted in an average of 9,805 injuries and 125 deaths.

Ways to Reduce Debris Accidents

There are several powerful strategies that drivers can follow to greatly reduce the risk of debris-related accidents, which include:

  • Adequately maintain your vehicle. Poorly worn or underinflated tires can quickly result in blowouts that leave pieces of tire scattered throughout the road. Improper maintenance of other vehicle pieces including exhaust pipes can cause this equipment to break off vehicles, fall loose, and end up in the road where it can be struck by other drivers.
  • Make sure the vehicle’s load is secured. For drivers who are tasked with transporting cargo, it is critical to make sure that these items are properly secured. Some of the steps that drivers or those responsible for loading vehicles should use include tying down cargo and never overloading.
