School Bus Collides with Utility Pole in Blount County

shutterstock_669670867

Blount County, TN (August 31, 2020) The Blount County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating an accident that occurred the morning of August 31st and involved a school bus that crashed into a ditch, then struck a utility pole and knocked it down. Fortunately, no students were on board the bus at the time of the accident, only the driver. The driver is reported to have not been injured in the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Carpenters Grade Road at Mint Road. The Blount County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the area will be closed for several hours while Alcoa Electric sets up a new pole. Additional details about the accident and how it occurred are still pending.

While school buses occasionally end up in accidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that students are 70 times more likely to arrive at school safely when they take a bus rather than a car to school.

Common Causes of School Bus Accidents

Some of the most common reasons why school bus accidents occur include:

  • Bus drivers who attempt to perform multiple tasks while driving and end up in accidents because they are distracted
  • Bus drivers who are tired and make errors while driving, which might include failing to check a blind spot or turning too sharply
  • Sometimes, school bus accidents are not the driver’s fault. Instead, some school buses are the result of poor inspection and mechanical errors.
  • It’s not always the bus driver who makes an error that results in an accident; sometimes accidents occur due to other drivers.
