Cocke County, TN (August 24, 2020) Three women were killed in a wrong-way accident that occurred late on August 24th. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that a Ford Focus was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 when it collided head on with a pick-up truck. The Ford Focus’s driver as well as the two passengers were killed in the collision. The driver of the pick-up truck as well as its passengers were injured. Additional details about how the accident occurred are still being investigated by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The Federal Highway Safety Administration reports that each year in the United States, 300 to 400 people are killed in wrong way crashes. While this number represents a small percentage of vehicle fatalities, wrong way crashes tend to be more severe than other types of collisions.

Common Causes of Wrong Way Accidents

Some of the most common reasons why wrong way accidents occur include:

  • Elderly drivers with dementia or vision difficulty
  • Distracted drivers who end up taking a wrong turn
  • Drivers who are not familiar with an area
  • Intoxicated motorists
  • Road design issues
  • Roads that do not contain adequate warning signs
  • Traffic detours that lead motorists to take an incorrect path
