Murfreesboro, TN (October 9, 2020) One person was killed on October 9th in a tractor-trailer accident that occurred at the 72 mile marker on Interstate 24 West in Rutherford County between Interstate 840 and Almaville Road. Due to the accidents, all lanes of Interstate 24 were temporarily shut down as emergency crews responded. Westbound traffic was temporarily diverted onto Interstate 840 to decrease traffic congestion. An investigation into the accident is still pending.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security reports that there were 10,498 car crashes in Murfreesboro’s Rutherford County in 2019. This includes 7,702 accidents involving property damage only, 2,767 crashes involving injuries only, and 29 crashes involving fatalities. This data marks a substantial increase from the number of car crashes that occurred a decade ago in 2009 when 7,017 accidents occurred in Rutherford County. While car crashes can occur in countless ways, the most common cause of car accidents are rear-end collisions.
