Sevierville, TN (February 21, 2021) A preliminary accident report by the Sevierville Police Department reveals that two people were walking eastbound when one of the individuals was struck by a Nissan Altima. The 48-year-old victim ultimately passed away from injuries incurred in the accident. The other pedestrian who was involved in the crash was fortunately not injured. The 35 year-old driver of the Nissan Altima was also not injured. Interstate 40 was temporarily reduced to one lane until emergency workers could investigate the scene. The factors that led to the Nissan’s driver striking the pedestrian remain uncertain. It also remains uncertain whether the Nissan’s driver currently faces any charges.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2017, 5,977 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in the United States. This equates to one fatality every 88 minutes due to pedestrian accidents. Most of these fatalities occurred in urban areas at non-intersection locations at night. In addition to these fatalities, approximately 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments in 2017 for non-deadly crash-related injuries.
