Vehicle Overturns on Interstate 40

shutterstock_1220772814

Knoxville, TN (October 9, 2020) A vehicle overturned late on October 9th on Interstate 40. Fortunately, no serious injuries are reported to have been incurred in the accident. Due to the accident, all westbound lanes of Interstate 40 were temporarily shut down. An investigation into how the accident occurred is still underway. Further details about the accident including what caused it are still not available.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that rollovers have a higher fatality rate than other accidents. Among the 9.1 million passenger vehicle car crashes that occurred in 2010, only 2.1% involved a rollover. While this might seem like a small percentage of car accidents, rollovers represent approximately 35% of all fatalities from passenger vehicle accidents. This means that in 2010, over 7,600 individuals died as a result of rollover accidents. Some of the causes of rollover accidents include motorists who lose control of the vehicle and collide with curbs or guardrails, drivers who overcorrect by steering quickly to avoid obstacles in the road, vehicles with a high center of gravity that are inclined to tip overs, and multiple vehicle accidents in which one vehicle collides with the side of another vehicle.
