Two People Flown to Trauma Center after Explosion At Blue Springs Marina

Roane County, TN (August 8, 2020) Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency officers on August 8th responded to an emergency call at Blue Springs Marina, which is located in Roane County. Following multiple reports of small explosions from vessels at the marina, law enforcement as well as medics and firefighters arrived at the scene. As a result of the explosion from the vessel’s engine hatch, a married couple from Monroe County experienced serious injuries. Both individuals were flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Due to the explosion, the dock took substantial damage and six vessels were battered, two of which sank. Law enforcement officers went among boats located at the end of the dock to confirm that everyone was safe. Volunteer Electric helped turn off the marina’s power. Additional details about the accident are still under investigation and the cause of the explosion has not yet been determined.

The United States Coast Guard reports that in 2018, there were more than 200 boating accidents caused by fires and explosions on boats. While 147 of these accidents involved fuel, 73 accidents were non-fuel based, and 41 fires or explosions were of unknown origins. As a result of these fires and explosions, 4 individuals were killed while 117 people were injured.
