Putnam County, TN (January 16, 2021) Crews on the afternoon of January 16th worked to clean up a tractor-trailer fire that occurred on Interstate 40. The fire occurred quickly at the 273 mile marker of Interstate 40. The exact cause of the fire remains uncertain, but firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries are reported as a result of the fire.

The United States Fire Administration reports that from 2014 to 2016, approximately 171,500 highway vehicle fires occurred in the United States. This resulted in an annual average of 346 fatalities, 1,300 injuries, and $1.1 billion in property loss. Highway vehicle fires represent 13 percent of fires responded to by fire departments across the country. Insulation around electrical wiring as well as flammable liquids in the engine compartment are two of the most common reasons why highway vehicle fires occur. If your vehicle catches on fire, it is critical to remain calm. It is also a good idea as soon as it is safe to do so to pull over to the side of the road and turn off your vehicle.
