Police Chase Leads to Deadly Crash in Marion County

Marion County, TN (March 11, 2021) A man was killed in Marion County on March 11th after a police chase that began in Alabama came to an end in Marion County. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that the Stevenson Police Department began chasing the driver on Highway 72 in Alabama. The chase then crossed into Tennessee with law enforcement approaching the Kimball city limits before traveling on Interstate 24.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that around the 146 mile marker of Interstate 24, the driver lost control of his vehicle, struck an embankment, and began to roll end over end. The driver was then ejected from the vehicle and passed away at the scene. Additional details including what started the crash still remain uncertain.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found that while 74 percent of rollovers are associated with a pre-crash activity,  approximately 26 percent of these crashes involve vehicles that struck something. Accidents in which vehicle rolled over represented 28 percent of all passenger vehicle fatalities in 2019. The proportion of motor vehicle occupant fatalities involving rollovers was also much higher in single-vehicle crashes than multiple-vehicle accidents.
