Newport Hit-and-Run Driver Leaves Bumper Behind

HitRun3

Newport, TN (October 7, 2020) The Newport Police Department is searching for a hit-and-run suspect whose vehicle is missing a front bumper. Police report that the driver of a Honda Accord was involved in a hit-and-run close to the McDonald’s on Cosby Highway around 2:00 in the morning on October 7th. Additional details about the accident are still uncertain.

Data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System and reviewed by the AAA Foundation for Safety show that in 2016, there were 1,980 deadly hit-and-run accidents in the United States that resulted in 2,049 fatalities. In the most recent year where data is available, 138,500 injuries were incurred in 2015 as a result of hit-and-run accidents.

Various environmental factors including lighting and roadway geometry unexpectedly play a substantial role in increasing the likelihood of hit-and-run accidents. While anyone can be a hit-and-run driver, the most common groups known to flee crashes are young males who have a history of driving while intoxicated and license suspension. There are also several factors associated with the probability that a motorist will be found after causing a hit and run accident including the time of day, daylight, and whether the crash occurred in a rural or urban area.
