Morgan County Fatality After Vehicle Drivers Under Tractor Trailer

Truck5

Morgan County, TN (July 27, 2020) Fireworks and medical workers went on the morning of July 27 to the scene of an accident in the Stephens community. Initial reports reveal that an accident occurred on Highway 62 in Morgan County when a vehicle drove under a tractor trailer, which was pulling a mobile home. So far, at least one fatality has been attributed to the accident. Additional details about how the accident occurred are still pending.

The United States Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports that in 2017, there were 344,000 injury crashes and 4,237 fatal crashes involving large trucks. One of the deadliest types of truck accidents are underride accidents.

Common Causes of Underride Accidents

There are various reasons why underride accidents happen, but some of the most common causes include the following:

  • Trucks that lack adequate sides, which lead to smaller vehicles merging under the truck when side impact collisions occur.
  • Rear-end collisions when a truck driver slams on his brakes suddenly and the smaller passenger vehicle does not have adequate time to stop. As a result, the small vehicle becomes wedged beneath the trailer.
  • When the smaller vehicle strikes the back of a trailer at one of the truck’s corners rather than head-on. These are referred to as offset crashes and often deadly.
