Cumberland County, TN (April 7, 2021) A child was injured in a lawnmower accident in Cumberland County late in the afternoon on April 7th. At approximately 6 in the afternoon, emergency workers responded to Highland Ridge Driver to the accident, which involved a three-year-old child. The child was subsequently transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center by Lifestar. Injuries occurred when the child’s foot slid under the mower and the foot was struck by a blade. No other initial injuries are reported.

Data gathered from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System between the years to 2005 to 2015 reveals there were an estimated 934,394 lawn mower injuries treated in emergency rooms. This equates to 84,944 lawnmower accident injuries each year. The most commonly injured part of the body in lawnmower accidents are the hands and fingers. The most common type of injury is lacerations. Parents should remember that children who are younger than 12 should not use lawn mowers unsupervised. Children under the age of 16 also should not operate a riding lawn mower and never carry passengers on a riding mower.
