Interstate 40 Accident in Cumberland County Results in Multiple Injuries

Cumberland County, TN (August 27, 2020) A single vehicle accident occurred in Cumberland County shortly before 3 a.m. on August 27th and resulted in injuries for seven people. Law enforcement reports that a Toyota Sienna was traveling east at the 320 mile marker when the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered into a ditch, then entered an embankment and overturned. The driver was taken to Cumberland Medical Center for treatment but later released. The driver was also charged with simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and violation of child restraint laws. There were six passengers in the vehicle including one who was taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, one person who was flown by Lifestar to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in critical condition, one child who was taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center but placed in stable condition, and three younger children who were treated at Cumberland Medical Center.

Data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that the drug with the greatest increase in usage from 2007 to 2013/2014 was marijuana and its active ingredient, THC. The percent of THC-positive drivers was 8.6 in 2007 and increased by 47 percent to 12.6 percent in 2013/2014.
