Semi-Truck Transporting Cookie Dough Catches Fire

RoadDebris

Hickman County, TN (July 19, 2020) A semi-truck carrying cookie dough caught fire on a Tennessee highway on July 19, 2020. Based on a report provided by the Coble Fire Department, the accident occurred on Interstate 40 westbound close to mile marker 158. Hickman County Fire Department responded to and contained the fire. While this section of the Interstate was temporarily closed, it was reopened a few hours later. Fortunately, there were no injuries in the accident.

A study conducted by AAA reports that between 2011 to 2014, 200,000 car accidents were caused by road debris. These accidents resulted in 500 deaths and approximately 39,000 injuries. Many of these accidents occurred when drivers swerved to avoid debris.

How to Avoid Debris-Related Accidents

While cookie dough is a rare type of road debris, some of the most common obstacles that motorists encounter include furniture, tires, and other parts that become detached from vehicles. If you are a driver who is securing cargo in your vehicle, some of the steps that you can take to avoid debris-related accidents include:

  • Adequately maintain your vehicle
  • Fasten loads directly to the vehicle
  • Properly secure loads with straps and tarps
  • Retrieve any items that fall off your vehicle
