Fleeing Driver Crashes Into Tennessee Highway Patrol Car

Knoxville, TN (December 7, 2020) The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that a law enforcement officer  was struck on December 7th by a drug-impaired motorist who was attempting to flee. The driver has since been charged with driving under the influence and felony evading arrest.

The accident occurred after law enforcement tried to perform a traffic stop on a reckless driver on Interstate 40. Law enforcement spotted the vehicle swerving off the left shoulder several times until the vehicle eventually came to a full stop in the median. As law enforcement approached, the vehicle pulled out from the median and drove towards a patrol vehicle. The driver then collided with the front of the patrol vehicle, at which point law enforcement disabled the suspect’s vehicle. Law enforcement then found the driver in the vehicle barely conscious. No injuries are reported as a result of the accident.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that in 2018, 12.6 million individuals drove while under the influence of illicit drugs. While people who use drugs should create social strategies to avoid driving when they are impaired, people do not always stick to this policy and as a result, countless car accidents each year occur due to drug impaired drivers.
