Bedford County, TN (March 24, 2021) A five-year-old passed away and another young child was injured following a devastating head-on car crash that occurred on Highway 64 in Bedford County on the night of March 24th. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that a motorist was driving a sports utility vehicle westbound shortly before 8 at night. When this driver attempted to pass another vehicle on the road, he ended up colliding head-on into a sedan that was traveling in the opposite direction.

The five-year-old was later pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. An initial report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol indicated that a six-year-old child in the sedan had also died, but law enforcement later corrected this detail and stated that the child was injured but had survived. While the driver of the sedan and the driver of the sports utility vehicle were also injured, the extent of their injuries is still not known. An investigation into the crash is still ongoing. Motorists are advised to exercise caution while passing through the area.

The Insurance Information Institute has found that in 2018, head-on collisions represented more than 10% of fatal crashes where a head-on collision is the first harmful event.
