Similac Powdered Infant Formula Produced in Abbott Nutrition Facility

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the following powdered infant formulas have been connected to consumer reports of Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Newport infections: Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare powdered infant formulas.
These baby formulas were produced by Abbott Nutrition in the company’s facility in Sturgis, Michigan. As of April 1, 2022, the FDA has received four reports of Cronobacter sakazakii infections and one report of a Salmonella Newport infection. According to the FDA, all five infant illnesses resulted in hospitalization of the babies affected, and in two of the cases, Cronobacter may have contributed to infant deaths.
The FDA explains that these bacteria “can cause severe, life-threatening infections (sepsis) or meningitis (an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine.” Common symptoms may include but are not limited to:

- Irritability;
- Temperature changes;
- Jaundice;
- Grunting breaches;
- Abnormal movements; and
- Bowel damage.

- First two digits of the code are 22 through 37;
- Code on the container contains k*, SH, or Z2; and
- Expiration date is 4-1-2022 (i.e., April 2022) or later.
