Knoxville Xarelto Lawyer

The formation of a blood clot is an extremely dangerous health concern. For people with certain health conditions, including those who suffer from atrial fibrillation, the risk of forming a blood clot is very real. This risk also exists for patients with deep vein thrombosis, as well as patients who have recently undergone hip or knee replacement surgery. When a blood clot forms, it can travel to the heart or the brain, leading to a stroke. Contact our Knoxville Xarelto lawyers today.

Blood Thinning Medications Lead to Patient Harm

In order to reduce this risk and prevent stroke, a number of blood thinning medications have been designed by pharmaceutical companies over the years. Warfarin, also known by its brand names of Coumadin and Jantoven, is one such medication that is intended to prevent blood clots. However, warfarin, which was introduced in the 1950s, has proven to have serious risks that may mitigate its benefits, and patients taking warfarin require close monitoring, and often lifestyle and dietary changes as well.

As such, Xarelto was designed as a supposedly safer alternative to the more traditional blood thinning medication. However, Xarelto has proven to be just as dangerous – if not more so – as the old drug it was intended to replace.

The Dangers of Xarelto

It would be nice to think that prescription drugs on the market today, and which doctors prescribe on a regular basis, are safe for use and will not cause a patient any serious adverse health effects. Unfortunately, this is not always true: Xarelto, as well as countless other prescription drugs, can be extremely dangerous. A medication guide published by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration explains the two biggest risks associated with taking Xarelto, which are:

  • Risk of having a stroke. Taking Xarelto is supposed to prevent a person from having a stroke by preventing blood from clotting. However, if a person who is taking Xarelto stops taking the medication, they have an increased risk of forming a clot in their blood which can then lead to a stroke.
  • Risk of severe bleeding. The other most serious risk of taking Xarelto is the risk of bleeding, which may be severe and lead to death. Because Xarelto is a blood thinning medication that prevents clotting, blood may not be able to clot when it needs to, resulting in continually and unstoppable bleeding. Risk of severe bleeding is more serious if the patient is also taking other medications that increase risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, warfarin, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

While the above risks are two of the most serious side effects of taking Xarelto, it should be noted that Xarelto is not recommended for patients with any existing kidney problems, and there is mounting evidence that suggests that Xarelto contributes to kidney damage.

Other risks, as noted in the FDA medication guide, include the risk of spinal hematoma if the medication is injected in the spine. The FDA warns that Xarelto should not be used by those with kidney or liver problems, bleeding problems, or those who are pregnant.

Symptoms of Serious Bleeding Caused By Xarelto

If you have any of the following symptoms, and are currently taking Xarelto, you need to seek medical care immediately:

  • Nose bleeds that are frequent;
  • Unusual menstrual or vaginal bleeding;
  • Signs of blood in stools (characterized by red or black stools);
  • Vomiting blood;
  • Coughing blood;
  • Red, pink, or brown urine; and
  • Bleeding in the gums.

It is important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible if you suffer from any signs of bleeding caused by Xarelto – your life may depend on it.

There Is No Antidote for Xarelto

What makes Xarelto more risky than warfarin? The fact that there is no antidote for Xarelto that can be used to prevent its blood-thinning effects if bleeding is severe. This means that if bleeding occurs, there may be nothing that medical professionals can do to stop it, especially if the bleeding is not diagnosed early enough. There is an antidote that can be used in a bleeding emergency for blood thinning caused by warfarin.

Lawsuits filed Against Bayer & Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Xarelto can cause severe bleeding that leads to hospitalization, and in some cases, death. Those who have suffered from internal bleeding, or surviving family members who have lost a loved one to severe bleeding caused by Xarelto, have taken legal action against Xarelto’s manufacturers – Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. People are seeking compensation for their bleeding injuries, and have filed lawsuits to recover damages for emotional trauma, hospital bills, injuries, and pain and suffering. These lawsuits claim that the drug’s manufacturers failed to warn the public of the risks of taking Xarelto and misrepresented the drug’s safety. Further, victims claim that Janssen Pharmaceuticals continued to market and sell the drug despite knowledge that it was dangerous and could lead to patient harm and death.

Am I Qualified for Compensation?

Xarelto’s manufacturers violated the duty of care owed to consumers in Tennessee and across the nation. If you have taken Xarelto and have suffered harmful effects and incurred damages in the form of injuries or medical expenses as a direct result, you may be a qualified candidate for compensation. Contact an experienced Knoxville dangerous drug attorney to get your free case review today and begin the process of holding Xarelto’s manufacturers liable for their negligent actions.
